چکیده

Previous research indicates that an increased amount of step width variability in humans is associated with an unstable locomotive pattern. For example, the elderly have an increased amount of step width variability compared to their younger counterparts (Ownings & Grabiner, 2004). This notion is further supported by simulations from passive dynamic walking models. Twodimensional passive dynamic walking models can produce a stable sagittal plane gait pattern based on mechanics alone. However, three-dimensional passive dynamic walking models cannot produce a stable gait and requires additional control in the frontal plane to prevent falls (Kuo, 1999). These scientific observations suggest that the medial-lateral motion of gait must be actively controlled by the nervous system, otherwise falls will occur. Experimental observations indicated that a gait pattern that lacks medial-lateral control will have an increased amount of step width variability (Ownings & Grabiner, 2004). However, it is not currently clear what neuromechancial variables are responsible for controlling the medial-lateral motion of gait.

Effect of Dual-Tasking on Variability of Spatiotemporal Parameters in Subjects with and without Anterior Cruciate Ligament Deficiency Using Linear Dynamics

Purpose: The present study aimed to determine the effect of dual-tasking on spatiotemporal characteristics in subjects with and without Anterior Cruciate Ligament Deficiency (ACLD) using linear dynamics. Methods: In this mixed model design study, spatiotemporal parameters were measured in 22 patients with ACLD (25.95±4.69 y) and 22 control subjects (24.32±3.37 y) while they were walking w...

A functional tracking task to assess frontal plane motor control in post stroke gait.

The ability to execute appropriate medio-lateral foot placements during gait is thought to require active frontal plane control and to be critical in maintaining upright posture during gait. The aggregate frontal plane metrics of step width and step width variability have been assessed for post-stroke populations, but only under normal walking conditions. However, in the case of stroke, limb sp...

Variability of step kinematics in young and older adults.

Fall-related injuries are the most common and serious medical problems facing older adults. Recent studies of older adults have focused on the variability of step kinematics and the relationship to falling. The accuracy of step variability estimates is proportional to the number of steps that are collected. The use of an instrumented treadmill allows simultaneous collection of spatial and tempo...

The energetic cost of maintaining lateral balance during human running.

To quantify the energetic cost of maintaining lateral balance during human running, we provided external lateral stabilization (LS) while running with and without arm swing and measured changes in energetic cost and step width variability (indicator of lateral balance). We hypothesized that external LS would reduce energetic cost and step width variability of running (3.0 m/s), both with and wi...

Variability in spatiotemporal step characteristics and its relationship to walking performance post-stroke.

Gait variability is suggested to be a quantifiable measure to evaluate mobility impairments. However, it is unknown whether gait variability could be used as a marker of impaired walking performance post-stroke. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine whether gait variability measures could be used as walking performance measures post-stroke. Hemiparetic variability was compared t...
